Woman Nearly Chops Lover’s Genitals

By George Munene

A man was seriously wounded when his girlfriend cut his genitals with a kitchen knife after a domestic quarrel at Thumaita village in Kirinyaga County.

The man, Eliud Kithaka, a stonemason was attacked Sunday morning in an incident that left relatives and villagers in shock.

He was sleeping in bed when his girlfriend of two years turned violent and almost chopped off his manhood.

The woman, who is a widow was trying to chasle away Mr Kithaka from her house after a quarrel.

DRINKING SPREE

Mr Kithaka, 40 said his girlfriend came home at 11 am after spending the night on a drinking spree and commanded him to leave the house.

He refused to leave and went to sleep but the woman took a kitchen knife and went for his genitals.

“I was sleeping and felt a sharp pain on my genitals. She was cutting them with a knife. I managed to snatch the knife from her,” he said.

After the attack, the woman who is a rice farmer fled leaving Mr Kithaka bleeding profusely.

LAND

Mr Kithaka managed to control the bleeding and went to a nearby clinic to seek treatment.

The victim claimed he left his wife for the woman after selling a piece of land.

“I squandered all the money with her and when I became broke, she attempted to dump me. When I resisted, she attacked me,” said Mr Kithaka.

A clinical officer at Sagana Sub-County Hospital, Ms Njambi Zaweria said the man needs specialised treatment.

Area police boss Sicily Gatiti said the woman has gone into hiding but police are looking for her.

Hawkers Allowed in City Centre From 2pm

By Lillian Mutavi

Hawkers will from now on operate within Nairobi City centre from 2pm, Governor Mike Sonko has said.

In a report he unveiled Tuesday on how to deal with the problem of hawking in the city centre, Mr Sonko highlights both short-term and long-term measures his administration will take to regulate the growing number of vendors.

The number of hawkers stands at over 10,000 this year.

RULES

This comes at a time when the county boss is under a lot of pressure to transform the city, whose standards have deteriorated due to hawking, traffic jams, street children and garbage.

“To ensure a harmonious relationship between the city county and the hawkers, there will be no hawking in front of shops before 2pm, no hawking on both sides of the road.

“The paths are available for pedestrians and no hawking beyond Tom Mboya Street,” Mr Sonko said.

COUNTY ASKARIS

The county, through two committees that have been set up, will implement the reforms in three phases.

One of the teams comprises eight executive members.

The other is composed of 20 members representing each street.

Mr Sonko said the hawkers will not be harassed by city askaris as the inspectorate had been ordered not to extort cash from them.

REGISTRATION

The moving of hawkers to designated areas will start immediately, with the committee assigned the task given a month to implement the orders.

After that, anyone who disobeys the regulations would be charged in court.

“To reduce conflicts, the city askaris should provide proof. They should take videos and photos,” the governor said.

Mr Sonko said the county government plans to register all hawkers and have the records computerised for ease of identification.

LICENCE FEE

Mr Sonko said only hawkers from Nairobi would be registered, with voters’ cards used for identification to lock out those from other regions.

He said his administration plans to provide access roads to the hawkers’ stalls.

With all the required amenities, the hawkers will be required to pay a licence fee of Sh2,000 a year.

IEBC Officials Meet Legal Team After Nasa Pulls Out of Race

The electoral commission is holed up in a meeting following the move by National Super Alliance (Nasa) to pull out of the October 26 repeat presidential elections.

In a post on its Twitter account, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) stated that the commissioners and the legal team are meeting to deliberate on the move.

“Following the withdrawal of the NASA presidential candidate, the Commission and the legal team are meeting and will communicate way forward,” the post read.

Nasa , in its statement over the withdrawal from the presidential race, accused the IEBC of bad faith and engaging them in a “ping pong game” in its preparation for the repeat polls.

“The IEBC has refused, neglected or failed to put in place mechanisms to correct these illegalities and irregularities. We deem that the fresh election ordered by the Supreme Court cannot therefore be held,” Nasa claimed.

The opposition claimed that the electoral agency had no intention of streamlining the electoral system to conform to the constitution and election laws.

Kenyan Artiste Claims Nyashinski Is a Snob

By Josephine Mosongo

Tanzanian rapper Nay wa Mitego has come out to say that the Kenyan music industry has stagnated because of lack of unity and support.

The ‘Makuzi’ rapper was responding to an article by gossip show ‘Udaku Sasa’ co-host Sameer in which he revealed that some Kenyan artistes were not in support of Nyashinki’s MTV EMA nomination for Best African Act.

Nyashinski was recently announced as one of the nominees of the MTV EMA awards. He will be battling it out in the Best African Act category with heavyweights Wizkid, Nasty C, Davido, C4Pedro and Babes Wodumo.

In a lengthy post on Instagram, Sameer revealed that there is a popular Kenyan artiste who has a grudge with Nyashinski and could not be bothered to support him for his big nomination. “Nyash is a snob, the guy doesn’t even pick phone calls,” the artiste told Sameer.

In response Nay wa Mitego said: “Ndio maana game ya Kenya ime stuck! Sisi TZ hatuna umoja ka vile but si kwenye vitu kama hivyo. Angalau tunawekaga tofauti zetu pembeni kidogo. Ila kwa hiyo ya #Nyashinski mmetuzidi wazee. Roho mbaya,” he wrote on Instagram.

Two Wanted Over Plan to Bring Guns to Nairobi Demos

By Simon Ndonga

Nairobi — Police are looking for two suspects suspected to hold illegal fire arms that will allegedly be used during the NASA demonstrations in Nairobi that continue Monday.

They have identified the suspects as Erick Owino and Francis Oduor and are appealing to the public to help in identifying and tracking them.

More street protests are expected Monday in Nairobi and other major towns across the country to push for changes at the electoral body ahead of the planned repeat presidential polls.

Security has been beefed up even as anti-riot police have been put on standby at various sites to contain any rowdy behavior.

Police say they have been notified by the NASA team of plans to demonstrate but are yet to receive a notification from the Nairobi Business Community.

Supreme Court to Decide Wafula Chebukati Case Today

By Sam Kiplagat

Parties in the case filed by IEBC will this morning converge at the Supreme Court as chairman Wafula Chebukati seeks clarification on his role in the repeat presidential poll.

Mr Chebukati wants to know how the commission will treat discrepancies in case they are noted during the verification of presidential results.

FORMS 34B

Through his lawyer Kamau Karori, Mr Chebukati said there is a confusion in the judgement issued by the apex court on September 20 because judges stated the chairman must verify the results before declaring the winner.

He said it was necessary that the court clarify whether he and the commission can correct errors in Forms 34B when the results do not tally or conform with the results captured in Forms 34A.

“Clearly, there was an oversight in the judgment to the extent that the court did not complete its directions on how the 2nd Respondent (the chairman) should handle or treat any discrepancy in the tallies in Forms 34B when compared to the tally of the results in Forms 34A,” Mr Chebukati said in his affidavit.

The commission said there is confusion since the court, quoting the Court of Appeal in the Maina Kiai case, expressly stated that the chairman cannot correct, vary, confirm, alter, modify or adjust the results transmitted to the national tallying centre from the constituency tallying centre.

Resources Conflict Uproots Hundreds of Kenyan Families

By Maria Macharia

Nairobi — RAGING inter-communal conflict due to the worst drought in years has displaced more than 200 families in central Kenya. Families in the Baringo County have borne the brunt of the clashes over receding resources such as water and arable land in the East African country. Some 146 families in Makutani and 60 households in Tangulbei have been uprooted during the violence pitting farming villagers and nomadic livestock herders. Amid the skirmishes, some schools have been closed, forcing children from displaced families to attend classes at distantly located schools that are about 20 kilometres away from displacement camps. This has caused congestion in host schools that have taken in the 350 affected children. Drought is projected to persist with rain projected to be 20 to 30 percent below average in the ongoing season. “This is likely to keep staple food prices persistently above five-year averages across the country, further constraining household food access,” a humanitarian spokesperson said. Meanwhile, the conditions at the displacement camps have raised fears of an outbreak of cholera currently battering the country to worsen. A total of 55 deaths from 2 996 cases of the water borne disease have been reported in recent weeks. The recurrent strike by nurses in demand of better working conditions and improved salaries are worsening the situation. Clinical officers, pharmaceutical technologists and lab technicians have also joined the ongoing strike, which has now lasted over 100 days.
