Uganda: Foot and Mouth Disease Hits Luweero Again

By Dan Wandera

Luweero — The Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries has imposed a cattle movement ban in Luweero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola districts to contain the outbreak of foot -and -mouth disease (FMD) which was detected early this week.

In Luweero District, the animal movement ban covers the entire Butuntumula Sub-county where the first case of FMD was detected at Kaaya Farm in Kalwanga village on Easter Monday. However, the cattle movement ban extends to Nakasongola and Nakaseke Districts where the farm stretches for more than 60 square miles.

“We want to ensure that FMD does not spread to other areas outside this large farm (Kaaya Farm) which stretches through the districts of Nakaseke, Luweero and Nakasongola. We have embarked on an animal census exercise to identify the number of animals on the 60-square mile farm,” Dr Aloysius Lumbuye, the Luweero District veterinary officer, told the Daily Monitor yesterday.

“We need to get the exact number of animals on this entire farm and submit the information to the ministry of Agriculture,” he added

In Nakaseke District, the first case of FMD was detected on a farm at Kijumba village in Ngoma Town Council, according to Dr Moses Ssekandi, the Nakaseke District veterinary officer.

Past disasters

In 2014 , FMD hit about 30 districts across the country and government imposed a quarantine and sale of beef and dairy products in those district only resumed six months later after containing the disease .
