Nigeria: Kebbi Agric Loan Defaulters Given Three Weeks to Pay

By Ismail Adebayo

Birnin Kebbi — The Kebbi State Government has given beneficiaries of loan by the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) under the Anchor Borrowers Programme in Suru Local Government Area up to three weeks to pay back.

Over 11,000 farmers benefitted from the loan in Suru but the state government and BOA officials have been having some difficulties since last year in getting the farmers to pay back the loan. A loan of N128, 200 was given to each of the farmers to produce rice and wheat.

Speaking during the debt recovery exercise in Suru, the deputy governor and chairman of the Debt Recovery Committee set up by the state government, Alhaji Samaila Yombe Dabai intimated the farmers on the legal action being planned by the government should they fail to redeem their debt on or before July 10. He said it was against the teaching of Islam for any Muslim not to redeem loan given to him, and enjoined them to act as good Muslims and pay back, especially also for them to be eligible for subsequent loans the government planned to give to the farmers to boost agricultural production.

The District Head of Suru town, Dr Muhammed Bello and the Sole Administrator, Alhaji Umar Maigandi had earlier appealed to the state government and officials of the BOA to give the farmers three weeks to pay back the loan.
